The entries in ScientiaArborum summarize critical knowledge about each species – that is, the information needed both to avoid costly mistakes and to maximise benefits, whether monetary or environmental.  It does so by describing, for each species, salient characteristics and their implications, both positive and negative.   Four guiding principles are followed:

• General technical knowledge, defined as that which applies to all or most species (e.g., “prefers fertile sites”) is excluded.
• All information is based on either peer-reviewed publications, high-quality extension materials, or direct experience.
• The distinguishing characteristics of species are stressed (e.g., “grows unusually well in poorly-drained soil”).
• Information without practical use or implications is excluded.
